What does the first series usually look like?
A first PRP series is typically about three sessions spaced roughly a month apart. Ultimate Male’s published plan is three to four sessions about a month apart for most men, which sits close to what dermatology sources describe.
The American Academy of Dermatology describes monthly visits for the first three months. Many of the controlled trials used the same rhythm: the 2015 trial that reported gains in hair count and density gave three treatments at 30-day intervals. A 2020 systematic review concluded that at least three PRP injection sessions are needed.
Why a series rather than one visit? The 2019 review below notes that platelets keep making growth factors for about seven days, while follicles respond over months. Repeating the treatment through the first few months gives follicles several rounds of exposure before results are judged.
How often are maintenance sessions needed?
After the first series, maintenance holds what you gained. How often depends on who you ask, because the ideal schedule has not been settled.
| Source | First series | Maintenance after that |
|---|---|---|
| American Academy of Dermatology | Monthly for 3 months | Every 3 to 6 months |
| 2019 review’s proposed protocol | Monthly for 3 months | Every 3 months through the first year (6 sessions in year one), with 6-month spacing also described |
| Ultimate Male’s published plan | 3 to 4 sessions about a month apart | Every 12 to 18 months |
The 2019 review is candid that the optimal number of treatments and the time between them have not been established. It notes that one study saw density drop at six and twelve months after the final session while staying above baseline. In the 2015 trial, four men reported progressive loss again 12 months or more after their last treatment and were treated again.
What changes the count for a given man?
Several factors push the number up or down, and most of them only become clear after the first series.
- Your stage. The 2020 review found PRP worked better in men with low or moderate pattern loss than in advanced loss.
- How you respond. Photos at your check-ins show whether gains are holding or slipping, which sets the maintenance interval.
- Other treatments. Men also using minoxidil or finasteride have a second mechanism working between visits.
- How fast your loss is moving. Sudden, heavy shedding is a reason to look for another cause, such as illness or stress, before counting sessions.
- Your goals. Holding steady and rebuilding density are different targets.
Because these vary, think of the first series as a test. If you respond, maintenance is planned around how quickly gains fade. If you do not, more sessions are not automatically the answer.
Related question: is one session ever enough?
Rarely, if the goal is a lasting change. In the 2019 review’s summary table, the one trial that gave a single PRP treatment did not find a benefit, and that study was in women. The trials with positive results mostly used three or more sessions.
A single top-up visit can make sense later, as maintenance. It is not a substitute for the first series.
How Ultimate Male plans your sessions
At our San Gabriel and Downey clinics, the provider maps out your first series at the consultation and books photo check-ins alongside it. You see the full plan before committing, including how the maintenance interval will be decided. Our answer on how long PRP takes to work explains when results are judged, and does PRP for hair hurt covers the visit itself.
On cost, the price depends on the number of sessions, and bundle pricing applies to multi-session plans. Ultimate Male is direct-pay, offers financing through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay, and quotes the course before you book. Under IRS Publication 502, procedures aimed mainly at appearance are generally not medical expenses, so PRP for hair is usually not FSA or HSA eligible. Our PRP hair restoration cost page lists the cost drivers, and the hair restoration page covers the treatment itself.
