How does booking blood work directly work?
You go straight to the clinic, without a referral from another doctor. At Ultimate Male the path has four steps:
- A free 10-minute phone call, or a booking through the online scheduler, where you explain what you want checked and why.
- A panel matched to your question. A PA-C or MD orders the tests that fit, whether that is the TRT pre-screening panel, the comprehensive panel or a targeted cardiovascular or nutrient panel.
- An on-site draw at the San Gabriel or Downey clinic, often on the day you come in; our answer on same-day blood draws explains how scheduling works.
- A one-on-one review once the results are back, usually 24 to 48 hours later.
If you are not sure which panel you need, the free health assessment is another way to start the conversation.
Men usually take this route for a specific reason. Some want a testosterone workup their physical did not include, some want cardiovascular markers such as ApoB or Lp(a) that a basic cholesterol test leaves out, and some simply want a baseline before starting a new training or weight-loss plan. Our comparison of a men’s health panel and annual physical labs shows where the two overlap.
Who reviews the results with me?
Your provider does, in person or by appointment, and that review is included with every panel. It matters more than it sounds. MedlinePlus points out that lab results are combined with your history, symptoms and exam to reach a diagnosis, and that even when you can read results in an online record, it is still important to talk with a provider about what they mean for you.
A number flagged high or low is not automatically a problem, and a number inside the range is not automatically fine. The review is where a borderline testosterone, a creeping A1c or an odd liver enzyme gets put in context and turned into a plan, whether that is a retest, a lifestyle change, a treatment option or a referral elsewhere.
Can my primary care doctor see my results?
Yes, and keeping your doctor informed is usually wise. Federal privacy law gives you the right to see and get a copy of your health record, and the government’s patient guide to health records notes that you can share it with anyone you choose, including a new doctor or another provider.
The simplest approach is to ask the team at your visit how they can send results to your doctor, or to take the full report yourself and bring it to your next physical. The full report, rather than a screenshot, carries the date, time, reference ranges and lab name your doctor will want. Our guide to coordinating TRT with your primary care doctor covers how men handle ongoing care between two clinicians.
What does direct-pay blood work cost?
Ultimate Male does not publish prices, so you get a quote before anything is drawn. The clinic does not bill insurance; instead you pay per visit, with itemized receipts for FSA, HSA and out-of-network claims and financing available through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay. What drives the total is mostly which panel you need. Our page on blood work cost without insurance breaks down those drivers.
Related question: do I need a referral for TRT?
Not to be evaluated. The same direct path applies to a testosterone evaluation, with the pre-screening panel bundled into the first consultation. Our answer on whether you need a referral for TRT explains how that visit works and what it does and does not promise.
Booking your first panel
Call 626-319-5261 or book online, say what prompted you to get tested, and mention any recent labs you already have. The team will tell you which panel fits, whether you need to fast and which clinic and time suit you. Every panel and its markers are listed on our preventative blood testing page, and our answer on how long blood test results take explains what happens after the draw.
