Can body sculpting get rid of visceral fat?

Short answer

Not reliably. Body sculpting devices such as NEO Slim are built to reduce the soft fat between your skin and abdominal muscle and to tone the muscle itself. Visceral fat sits deeper, around your organs, and it shrinks with overall weight loss and regular exercise. One small uncontrolled study reported a visceral drop after treatment, which is too thin to rely on.

Which belly fat does body sculpting target?

Body sculpting targets subcutaneous fat, the layer between your skin and your abdominal muscles that you can grab between two fingers. NEO Slim pairs radiofrequency heat aimed at that layer with electromagnetic pulses that make the muscle underneath contract hard and repeatedly. The goal is a thinner layer on top and a firmer wall beneath.

The research on this technology measures exactly those two things. A 2024 systematic review of 15 studies found that, in abdominal studies using imaging, fat thickness fell by an average of 5.5 mm and muscle thickness rose by 2 mm. None of the included studies reported weight change, and two found marginal or no benefit. That is a contouring result, measured in millimeters, not a change in the fat packed around your liver and intestines.

What about the study that measured visceral fat?

One study did look deeper, and it deserves a fair read. In a 2023 retrospective MRI analysis, 16 men and 24 women who had three weekly 30-minute treatments with a radiofrequency and electromagnetic device showed an average 17.8% smaller visceral fat area three months later.

The limits matter as much as the number. Every participant was treated, so there was no untreated group to compare against, and the data were reviewed after the fact rather than collected to test this question. It is an interesting early signal. It is not a reason to choose sculpting over weight loss when your health risk sits in the deep layer.

How can you tell which type you carry?

A tape measure, a pinch and a few lab values answer most of the question before you book anything.

Clue Points to pinchable (subcutaneous) fat Points to visceral fat
How the belly feels Soft roll you can grab Firm and round, pushes outward
Waist at the navel Near a healthy range Over 40 inches
Labs Normal triglycerides, glucose and liver enzymes High triglycerides, rising A1c, fatty liver signs
Arms and legs Similar fat everywhere Lean limbs with a large middle

The waist number comes from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which says a waist over 40 inches in men raises the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. A body composition analysis adds an estimate of fat and lean mass, and our answer on how to measure visceral fat compares the options, up to CT and MRI.

What shrinks visceral fat instead?

Losing weight shrinks it, and the deep layer tends to respond well. In the STEP 1 body composition substudy, adults on semaglutide lost 27.4% of their visceral fat over 68 weeks, compared with 19.3% of their total fat mass. Regular aerobic exercise helps too, and keeping alcohol and sleep in check removes two common drags on progress.

Targeted ab work does not do it. In a six-week randomized trial, people doing abdominal exercises five days a week improved their endurance but saw no change in belly fat measurements. Our page on visceral fat in men covers why this layer carries more risk.

Can you combine sculpting with medical weight loss?

Yes, and the order usually matters. When the deep layer is the problem, weight loss comes first, and sculpting is saved for the soft fat and muscle tone that remain once your weight is steady. Our comparison of NEO Slim and GLP-1 medicines explains how men sequence the two.

Paying for them differs as well. NEO Slim is a cosmetic treatment, and under IRS Publication 502 cosmetic procedures generally are not FSA or HSA eligible. A weight loss program that treats a diagnosed disease such as obesity can qualify, with itemized receipts from the clinic.

How Ultimate Male sorts out which plan fits

At our San Gabriel and Downey clinics, the first step is finding out which layer you are dealing with: waist measurement, a body composition scan and blood work, then a one-on-one review with a PA-C or MD. If visceral fat and metabolic labs are the issue, the conversation turns to medical weight loss with nutrition, activity and, when you qualify, semaglutide or tirzepatide.

If your numbers are healthy and the issue is a stubborn pinchable layer, NEO Slim body sculpting may be the right tool now. Either way, you hear which one fits before you spend anything. Start with a free 10-minute call at 626-319-5261.

Will crunches burn the deep belly fat instead?
No. Ab work strengthens the muscle under the fat, but the body draws on fat stores from everywhere when you are in a calorie deficit, not from the muscle you are training.
Can I use FSA or HSA money for NEO Slim?
Generally not. IRS Publication 502 treats cosmetic procedures as ineligible. A medical weight loss program can qualify when it treats a diagnosed disease such as obesity, and your plan administrator makes the final call.
Is a firm belly always visceral fat?
Usually, but not always. Bloating, a large liver or a weak abdominal wall can change the shape too, which is why a measurement and labs beat a mirror check.
