Which pattern do your spots follow?
The choice gets much easier once you name the pattern. Look at your face in daylight and match it to one of these.
| What you see | Leans toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lots of small, light brown freckles across cheeks and nose, with rough or dull skin | VI Peel | The problem is spread across the whole surface |
| A few distinct, darker spots with clear edges | PicoSure Pro | Each spot is a clear target for the laser |
| General dullness and texture plus a few dark spots that stand out | Both, staged | The peel evens the background; the laser handles what remains |
| Blotchy, symmetrical patches on both cheeks | Diagnosis first | May be melasma, which needs a gentler plan |
| A spot that is changing, itching or bleeding | Dermatologist first | Needs a medical check before any cosmetic treatment |
If you are not sure which row fits, that is what the consultation is for. Our condition page on sun spots on the face in men shows the common patterns.
Why do scattered spots and rough texture favor a VI Peel?
A chemical peel works across the whole treated area at once. The solution loosens the outer layers of skin, which then shed over about a week and take a share of the surface pigment and roughness with them. That makes it efficient for diffuse freckling and texture, where lasering spot by spot would mean hundreds of small targets.
It also asks for patience. According to the manufacturer’s FAQ, a series of three to six peels is generally recommended for optimal results, spaced every four to six weeks. Each peel brings a week of visible peeling, and the American Academy of Dermatology says skin that has healed after a peel needs sunscreen every day. Our VI Peel for sun damage page covers the series in detail.
Why do distinct dark spots favor PicoSure Pro?
A laser is precise where a peel is broad. PicoSure Pro aims a 755 nm wavelength at the pigment in each spot, and the FDA cleared that wavelength in 2021 for removing benign pigmented lesions. Skin between the spots is left largely alone.
For well-defined spots, it can also be quick. The AAD notes that one or two laser treatments can treat age spots quickly, with crusting or temporary darkening as the usual side effects. A peel series aimed at the same dark spot would take longer and might only lighten it.
When do men need both, and in what order?
Men who have spent decades outdoors often have both problems: a weathered, uneven background and a few dark spots that stand out. Doing one treatment and expecting it to fix both usually disappoints.
A common approach is to start with whichever problem bothers you most. If texture and overall tone are the main complaint, peels come first, and the laser cleans up the spots that remain. If two or three dark spots on the cheekbone are what you see in every photo, the laser goes first. Either way, the two are done on separate days, with the skin fully settled from one before the next begins.
How do downtime and cost compare?
The two ask for different kinds of time. A VI Peel brings about a week of whole-face peeling, heaviest on days three to five; our answer on VI Peel downtime covers it day by day. PicoSure Pro leaves only the treated spots crusting for about a week, which our answer on PicoSure Pro downtime describes.
Cost follows the same logic. A peel is priced per session for the face, while laser work scales with the number and size of spots. Ultimate Male does not publish prices, but you get a written quote before you book.
How Ultimate Male helps you choose
At your consultation, one of our aesthetic nurses looks at your skin in good light, asks what you notice most in the mirror and in photos, and checks for any spot that should see a dermatologist first. You leave with a recommendation that names the treatment, the likely number of visits and the aftercare, and an honest note if sunscreen alone would be a sensible first step.
