What PicoSure Pro does to a sun spot
A sun spot, which dermatologists call a solar lentigo, is a flat patch of extra pigment left behind by years of ultraviolet light. PicoSure Pro aims a 755 nm laser at that pigment in pulses that last trillionths of a second. The energy arrives so fast that the pigment breaks into fine fragments, and your body’s cleanup cells carry them away over the following weeks.
The device is FDA-cleared for this job. A 2021 FDA 510(k) summary for the PicoSure platform lists the 755 nm wavelength for removing tattoos and benign pigmented lesions. Clearance means the FDA found the laser equivalent to devices already on the market. It says nothing about how your particular spots will respond, which is why the consultation matters.
If your discoloration is blotchy and spread across both cheeks rather than spotty, it may be melasma, a different condition with a different plan. Our page on PicoSure Pro for melasma explains why.
Who it suits, and who needs a different check first
PicoSure Pro tends to suit men with:
- Flat, clearly edged brown spots on the cheeks, temples, forehead, scalp line, hands or forearms
- Spots that have looked the same for months
- A willingness to wear sunscreen every day afterward
Some spots should not go under a cosmetic laser at all until a dermatologist has seen them. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that what looks like an age spot could be skin cancer. A spot that is growing, changing color, bleeding, itching or raised gets checked first, and our article on whether sun spots can turn into cancer covers the warning signs.
A fresh tan or sunburn over the area means waiting until it fades. Men with medium to deep skin tones can be treated, but the settings are more conservative because the risk of rebound darkening is higher. Our answer on PicoSure for Asian and Latino skin goes into that in detail.
How many sessions do discrete spots need?
Distinct, well-defined spots usually need few visits. The AAD says one or two laser treatments can treat age spots quickly. In a randomized study of a 755 nm picosecond laser, 30 adults had a single treatment on sun spots on the arm, and a blinded physician rated 25 of those spots as more than 50% improved at 12 weeks.
A 2025 systematic review of solar lentigo treatments found picosecond lasers produced success rates between 67.9% and 93.02% across trials. That range is wide because studies used different devices, settings and skin types.
| What shapes your session count | How it changes the plan |
|---|---|
| Contrast between spot and skin | A dark spot on lighter skin gives the laser a clear target |
| Your skin tone | Deeper tones get gentler settings, which can mean an extra visit |
| Spot type | True sun spots clear faster than melasma or mixed pigment |
| Sun after treatment | New exposure can bring fresh pigment into the same area |
A realistic plan is one session, a review about six weeks later, and a second pass for any spot that is lighter but still visible.
Your PicoSure Pro visit, step by step
- Skin review and photos. Your provider looks at each spot under good light, sets aside anything that needs a dermatologist, and photographs the area so you can compare later.
- Preparation. Your skin is cleansed of sunscreen and moisturizer, and you and the clinician both put on laser-safe eye protection.
- Treatment. The handpiece moves spot by spot. Each pulse feels like a quick snap against the skin, and a single spot takes only seconds.
- Cool down. The area is soothed, and a mineral sunscreen goes on before you leave.
- Aftercare plan. You get written instructions and a review date.
Darkening, flaking and the weeks after
The healing pattern is the part men are least prepared for. The AAD notes that lasers can cause crusting or temporary darkening of age spots, and that these usually fade quickly. A treated spot often looks a shade darker right away, then turns into a thin, coffee-ground crust over the next few days before it flakes off on its own.
| When | What is typical |
|---|---|
| Same day | Spot looks slightly darker, with mild redness around it |
| First several days | Spot darkens further and forms a thin crust |
| Once the crust flakes | Pink or lighter skin underneath that evens out over weeks |
| 6 to 12 weeks | Final result is easier to judge; second session if needed |
Let the crust fall off by itself. Wash gently, shave around treated spots rather than over them until they have flaked, and wear sunscreen and a hat outdoors. Our page on PicoSure Pro downtime has a fuller day-by-day picture.
Side effects and safety
Redness, mild swelling and crusting are expected. The most important risk is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a rebound darkening of the treated skin, which the 2025 review describes as the most frequent significant side effect of laser treatment for these spots. It is more likely in darker skin and after sun exposure during healing, and it usually fades with time and sun protection.
Less often, a treated area can heal lighter than the surrounding skin. Eye protection is required for everyone in the room. If you have many spots blended into broad, rough sun damage, spot-by-spot laser may be the slower route, and the VI Peel for sun damage treats the whole face at once.
Paying for treatment and booking at Ultimate Male
Ultimate Male is a direct-pay clinic and does not bill insurance. Your quote depends on how many spots are treated, their size and whether a second session is planned, and our PicoSure Pro cost page explains each factor. Laser treatment for the appearance of sun spots is cosmetic, and cosmetic procedures generally are not FSA or HSA eligible under IRS Publication 502. There is no membership to join; you pay for each laser visit as it happens, and CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending or Afterpay can cover a second session if you would rather not pay at once.
Your first visit is a consultation with our aesthetics team, who look at every spot before any laser is used and tell you plainly if one needs a dermatologist instead. Start with a free 10-minute call at 626-319-5261 or book a consultation online.
