Who is a realistic candidate for each?
NEO Slim is realistic for a man at or close to his goal weight, with a modest pocket of fat on the belly, arms, glutes or thighs, who wants firmer muscle there and cannot take time off. Liposuction is realistic for a man with a larger, well-defined fat deposit that has not changed with diet and exercise, who is healthy enough for surgery and willing to recover from it.
Neither is a fit for a man with a lot of weight to lose. That calls for a medical weight loss plan first.
Signs NEO Slim is the more realistic choice:
- You can pinch a modest roll in one area, not a handful.
- Your weight has been steady for a few months.
- You want firmer muscle as much as less fat.
- Taking a week or two off work, or skipping the gym for a month, is not an option.
Signs liposuction may be worth a surgeon’s opinion:
- The deposit is large, well defined and unchanged after months of steady effort.
- You want a bigger change than a gradual series can deliver.
- You are healthy enough for anesthesia and can plan for recovery time.
- Your skin still has good elasticity, since lipo does not tighten skin.

How does each one work?
NEO Slim: gradual change, no incisions
During a NEO Slim session you lie back for about 30 minutes while the device sets off deep muscle contractions and heats fat cells in the treated area. Most men book four to six sessions a few days apart, and the change builds over the following weeks.
Expect refinement, not transformation. A 2024 systematic review of electromagnetic contouring devices found abdominal studies averaged a 5.5 mm reduction in fat thickness and a 2 mm increase in muscle thickness, typically after four sessions. That can be the difference between a soft and a defined lower belly in a lean man; it will not reshape a large belly.
Liposuction: suction through small incisions
Liposuction removes fat through a thin tube passed under the skin. According to MedlinePlus, the tumescent technique injects a large volume of fluid containing the numbing medicine lidocaine, which may be the only anesthesia needed, while other techniques often need sedation or general anesthesia. It is designed for localized fat that has not responded to diet and exercise, not for weight loss, and it does not treat loose skin.
What recovery looks like
NEO Slim has no recovery period. Most men go back to work or the gym the same day, with sore muscles at most.
Liposuction recovery is real. MedlinePlus describes bandages for at least two weeks, a compression garment for several weeks, bruising that fades over about three weeks, swelling that can last months and about a month off strenuous exercise. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ recovery guide advises significantly limiting activity in the first week, with a return to work in weeks two to three depending on your job.
Side effects and risks
NEO Slim’s typical aftereffect is muscle soreness for a day or two. Devices of this type are generally avoided over metal implants and in men with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices. Our page on who should not get NEO Slim lists the screening questions.
Liposuction carries surgical risks. MedlinePlus lists infection, bleeding, blood clots and fat embolism, fluid imbalance, nerve or skin damage, uneven or dimpled results, lidocaine reactions and loose skin, and notes that serious or rarely fatal complications can occur. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, lung problems and smoking all need attention before surgery.
Convenience and cost factors
The two costs are structured differently. NEO Slim is priced per session or series and scales with the number of areas. Liposuction includes surgeon, anesthesia and facility fees, garments and time off work. Under IRS Publication 502, cosmetic surgery and similar procedures are generally not deductible medical expenses, so neither is usually FSA or HSA eligible. Ultimate Male does not perform surgery; we offer NEO Slim, with financing through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay.
How we help you decide
Our job at the consultation is to tell you honestly which group you are in. We ask about your weight history, training, the area that bothers you and how much change you are hoping for. If your goal needs the volume only surgery can deliver, we will say that, and suggest you talk with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
If NEO Slim fits, you get a written plan for the areas, number of sessions and what to expect. You can read about whether NEO Slim works, compare non-surgical options in NEO Slim vs CoolSculpting, or see stubborn belly fat in men for the bigger picture. Sessions are available at both clinics through NEO Slim body sculpting.
