How to tell an acne scar from a mark that will fade
An acne scar changes the surface of the skin. You can feel it or see it catch the light: a dip, a pit, a soft wave or, less often, a raised bump. A flat brown, red or purple mark where a pimple used to be is usually not a scar at all.
The American Academy of Dermatology puts it plainly: a flat spot of color after acne clears usually is not a scar, and that discoloration tends to fade over time while a true scar stays. The difference matters because the treatments are different. Our page on dark spots after acne or razor bumps covers the flat, colored marks. This page is about texture.
Most acne scars are depressed, sitting below the surrounding skin. Clinicians often sort them into three shapes:
- Rolling scars: broad, shallow, sloping dips that make skin look wavy in side lighting.
- Boxcar scars: wider depressions with sharper edges, shallow or deep.
- Icepick scars: narrow, deep pits that look like large open pores.
Why some men scar and others do not
According to the AAD, scarring is more likely if you had deep, painful acne, if a parent or sibling has acne scars, or if you picked, popped or squeezed your breakouts. Deep cystic acne damages the collagen that holds skin smooth, and the body’s repair job leaves a dip where the tissue used to be.
A few causes are specific to men. Breakouts on the jaw and neck get scraped by a razor day after day. Testosterone therapy and anabolic steroids can trigger new acne in some men, and the acne on TRT answer explains how that is managed. And the longer deep acne goes untreated, the more chances inflammation has to leave a mark.
Which scars a VI Peel can soften
The VI Peel is a medical-grade chemical peel made with a blend that includes TCA, salicylic acid, retinoic acid and vitamin C. Applied in layers, it removes damaged outer skin and prompts the skin to renew, which smooths fine texture and softens the edges of shallow scars. Ultimate Male uses it for tone, texture, acne scarring and sun damage, and it is formulated for use on all skin tones.
The honest picture depends on scar shape:
| Scar type | What a VI Peel series can do | What usually helps more |
|---|---|---|
| Rough texture and enlarged-looking pores | Often a visible improvement | Peels alone may be enough |
| Rolling scars | Softer edges and smoother light reflection | Peels plus collagen-building procedures |
| Shallow boxcar scars | Moderate softening | Peels with other resurfacing |
| Deep boxcar and icepick scars | Little change in depth | Procedures that work at the scar level, often from a dermatologist |
| Raised or keloid scars | Not the right tool | Injections or laser from a dermatologist |
The AAD’s acne scar treatment guide lists peels among the options for depressed scars and notes that icepick scars need different treatment than rolling scars. It also describes mild peels as a series, typically 3 to 5 treatments spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Your own schedule is set by how your skin responds.
What a VI Peel series looks like
A VI Peel visit takes about 30 minutes. The skin is cleansed, then the solution is applied in layers, which most men feel as warmth and tingling. You go home with instructions and a short aftercare routine.
Mild redness is common right away. Peeling usually begins two to three days later and can last up to a week, mostly around the mouth, nose and cheeks. Many men notice smoother skin after the first peel, and results build with each session in the series. Our VI Peel for acne scars page explains the service, and the VI Peel aftercare guide covers the days after.
Sun protection is part of the treatment. The AAD’s chemical peel FAQs note that healing skin must be protected from the sun and that daily sunscreen helps maintain results once it heals.
A realistic result for deep, pitted scars
If most of your scarring is deep icepick or boxcar pits, a peel series will not lift the base of those scars. It can still improve the skin around them, making the surface look more even, which some men find is enough. Others want more change, and that usually means procedures aimed at the individual scar, done by a dermatologist or a facial plastic surgeon.
You will hear this at your consultation before any money is spent. Our goal is that you know what the VI Peel can realistically do for your specific scars, rather than discovering its limits after several sessions.
Safety on darker skin and when to call
People with skin of color can have chemical peels safely, but the AAD notes that a peel done without the right expertise can leave lasting pigment problems. Medium and darker skin is more likely to darken temporarily after any inflammation, so the clinic sets expectations and aftercare with that in mind. The men with darker skin tones page goes further into this.
Call the clinic if peeling skin blisters, oozes, crusts heavily or becomes increasingly painful, since those can be signs of infection. If you develop facial swelling, hives with trouble breathing, or throat tightness after any product, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Paying for treatment and getting started
Ultimate Male is a direct-pay clinic and does not publish prices. The VI Peel cost page lists what affects a quote, mainly how many sessions your scarring calls for. Acne scar treatment is generally considered cosmetic, so it usually does not qualify for FSA or HSA reimbursement under IRS Publication 502. CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay are available for financing.
The first step is a free 10-minute phone call or a booked consultation at San Gabriel or Downey. The aesthetics team looks at your scars in good light, sorts them by type, checks whether acne is still active, and tells you plainly how much a VI Peel series is likely to help. You can see the rest of what we offer on the aesthetics for men page.
