What a masculine contouring plan does
Masculine facial contouring is a plan, not a single injection. Filler is placed in two to four areas, most often the jawline, the outer cheekbone and the temples, sometimes the chin, to build the angles that read as male: a defined jaw angle, a squarer chin, a flat but high cheek and a smooth line from cheekbone to forehead.
The goal is structure. Female-pattern filler adds curves and fullness to the front of the cheek and lips; male-pattern work adds width and edges. That difference in placement is why men worry less about filler looking feminine when the injector plans the whole face instead of one spot.
At Ultimate Male the products for this work are VOLUMA (cheeks, chin and temples), RADIESSE (jawline structure) and, for gradual change, Sculptra. Each area gets the product that suits its depth and the result you want.
Who it suits, and who should not have it
Contouring tends to suit men who:
- Notice the jaw angle softening and the line from ear to chin blurring
- Have lost cheek and temple fullness from age, low body fat or GLP-1 weight loss
- Want a more defined face for photos, work or a life change, without surgery
It is a poor fit for men with a lot of loose skin under the jaw, where filler adds weight instead of definition, and for men expecting a surgical-level change. Anyone with severe allergies, a bleeding disorder, an active skin infection or allergy to lidocaine needs that reviewed first. The RADIESSE (+) instructions for use list bleeding disorders and severe allergies among its contraindications.
How syringe counts and staging are worked out
Nobody can give an honest syringe count without seeing your face, but published FDA studies show the range. The table uses median amounts from pivotal trials of products on our menu. Most participants were women, so male faces, which are larger, can sit at or above these numbers, while men with mild changes need less.
| Area | Product in the study | Median amount in the FDA pivotal study |
|---|---|---|
| Both cheeks | VOLUMA XC | 6.6 mL total over up to 2 sessions |
| Both temples | VOLUMA XC | 3.65 mL total (2.0 mL first session, 1.5 mL touch-up) |
| Jawline | RADIESSE (+) | 1.8 mL per side at the first session; about 1.1 to 1.25 mL per side at touch-up |
Sources: the VOLUMA cheek study summary, the VOLUMA temple study summary and the RADIESSE (+) jawline study summary. VOLUMA comes in 1 mL syringes and RADIESSE (+) in 1.5 cc and 0.8 cc syringes.
Added together, those medians come to roughly 14 mL for cheeks, temples and jaw. That is why a full plan is staged:
- Stage one: foundation. Cheekbones and, if needed, temples, because mid-face support changes how the jaw and lower face look.
- Stage two: definition. Jawline and chin, about four weeks later, once swelling is gone and the mid-face result is settled. Both studies allowed a touch-up about a month after the first session.
- Review and refine. A short visit to judge balance and add small amounts where needed.
Many men stop after stage one or two. The plan is written so you know the expected number of visits and the likely range of syringes before you commit.
The visits, step by step
Each session follows the same pattern. You review the plan and photos, the skin is cleansed, and topical numbing is applied if you want it. Your nurse injector places filler deep along bone with a fine needle or cannula, checks symmetry with you sitting upright, and finishes with a mirror review. Plan on avoiding hard training, heat and alcohol for about a day after each visit.
For individual areas in more depth, see jawline filler for men, RADIESSE for men and temple filler for men.
What to expect and when
Hyaluronic acid areas look lifted the same day. RADIESSE also shows an immediate result, and its instructions advise against overfilling because the area keeps improving over several weeks as the body responds. In the RADIESSE (+) jawline study, 67.3% of men and women who responded at 12 weeks still held that response at 48 weeks. In the VOLUMA cheek study, 67% still met the improvement target at 24 months.
Swelling is greatest for two to three days, so judge the stage-one result at around two weeks, not the next morning.
Side effects and safety
Expect tenderness, swelling, bruising and some firmness after each stage. Jawline injections can make chewing or opening the mouth feel stiff for a short time, which the RADIESSE (+) label notes as a temporary change in jaw function. RADIESSE is also visible on CT scans and sometimes on X-rays, so tell your dentist or radiologist about it.
The rare but serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel, which the FDA describes as able to cause tissue damage, blindness or stroke. Severe pain, blanching skin or any change in vision after treatment is an emergency: call 911 or go to an emergency room. Remember that VOLUMA can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, while RADIESSE cannot.
Paying for a staged plan and booking at Ultimate Male
A contouring quote depends on the number of areas, the products chosen and the total syringes across all stages. Because the work is cosmetic, it is generally not FSA or HSA eligible. You pay per visit with no membership, bundle pricing can apply when a longer plan is booked together, and financing options through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay can split the stages into payments. The cost drivers for this kind of work are laid out on our jawline filler cost page.
Your first step is a consultation at our San Gabriel or Downey clinic where the injector maps your face, photographs it and writes out each stage with its likely syringe range. Nothing is injected until you agree with that map. Explore all dermal filler treatments for men or request a contouring consultation.
