What Jeuveau is
Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a botulinum toxin type A, the same family as BOTOX, XEOMIN and Dysport. It works the same basic way: it blocks the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract, so the overlying skin creases less.
What sets it apart is its scope. The Jeuveau label approves it for one thing: the temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines, the 11 lines between the brows, in adults. Its initial U.S. approval came in 2019. Unlike BOTOX and XEOMIN, it has no medical indications such as spasticity or eyelid spasm, which is why it is often described as an aesthetics-only toxin.
Dosing for male muscles
The label dose is 20 units, given as 4 units at each of five points: two in each corrugator muscle and one in the procerus. That dose was tested in two trials in which 91% of participants were women. At day 30, 68% and 70% of people treated with Jeuveau reached at least a two-grade improvement in frown lines, compared with 1% on placebo.
Men were a small minority of those trials, and men’s frown muscles are usually larger and stronger. There is no male dose-ranging study for Jeuveau itself. The clearest evidence on men comes from onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX): in a randomized trial in 80 men, 40 to 80 units were consistently more effective and longer lasting than 20 units in the frown area, and the authors suggested men start at no less than 40.
Those findings cannot be copied across directly. The Jeuveau label is explicit that its units are specific to its own assay and cannot be compared with or converted into units of any other botulinum toxin. In practice, your injector treats the label dose as a floor for many men and adjusts to the strength of your frown, then refines at the next visit based on how you responded.
| Point | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Label dose | 20 units across 5 points |
| Approved area | Frown lines only; other areas are off-label |
| Unit conversion | Not interchangeable with BOTOX or XEOMIN units |
| Retreatment | No more often than every 3 months |
How quickly it works
The label measures results at day 30 and does not state an onset time. For botulinum toxin treatments generally, the American Academy of Dermatology says most people see results within 3 to 7 days, with improvement lasting about 3 to 4 months. Expect the effect to build over the first one to two weeks, and judge the result at around two weeks rather than the next morning.
If you are switching from another toxin, time the change for when your previous treatment has mostly worn off. That way your injector can see your frown at full strength, and you can tell whether any difference in onset or duration belongs to the new product rather than leftover effect from the old one.
When men switch to Jeuveau
Men end up on Jeuveau for a few practical reasons:
- Preference after comparison. Some men try more than one toxin over time and prefer how one feels or how long it lasts for them. Individual response varies.
- A frown-lines-only plan. If the 11 lines are your only concern, a product approved only for that area makes sense.
- A fresh look at dosing. Changing product often prompts a full reassessment of dose and placement, which is sometimes what was actually needed.
Switching is not a fix for antibody-related resistance. Jeuveau is a 900 kDa complex, meaning it carries accessory proteins along with the active toxin, much like BOTOX. Men worried about resistance from long-term use usually look at XEOMIN for men instead, since it is made without those proteins. Our BOTOX versus Jeuveau comparison lays out the differences side by side.
Who should not have it, and safety
Jeuveau is contraindicated with an infection at the injection site or an allergy to any botulinum toxin product. Men with nerve-muscle conditions, or who take aminoglycoside antibiotics or muscle relaxants, need individual review.
The label lists headache (12%), upper respiratory infection (3%), eyelid ptosis (2%) and a rise in white blood cell count (1%) as the most common reactions; headache was about as common on placebo, while ptosis occurred only in the Jeuveau group. Like every botulinum toxin, Jeuveau carries a boxed warning that its effects can spread beyond the injection area. If you have trouble swallowing, speaking or breathing after treatment, call 911 or go to the ER. Our page on whether BOTOX is safe long term covers repeat-treatment questions that apply to Jeuveau too.
Your Jeuveau visit and what you pay
The appointment follows a short sequence: watching your frown at rest and in motion, a conversation about how much movement to keep, five or more fine injections between the brows, and a few minutes of aftercare instructions. Most men return to work the same day. If this is your first time with any toxin, our guide to a first aesthetics consultation for men explains what to ask.
Jeuveau is used for appearance only, so under IRS Publication 502 it generally does not count as a medical expense, and FSA or HSA funds usually cannot pay for it. Ultimate Male posts no prices; cost depends on units. Payment is per visit, with no membership, and CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay offer financing.
Curious whether Jeuveau suits your frown better than what you use now? Call 626-319-5261 or book a wrinkle relaxer consultation at San Gabriel or Downey. Your injector will compare it honestly with the clinic’s other wrinkle relaxers and dose it for a male frown, not an average from a trial.
