JUVÉDERM vs RADIESSE: Choosing a Filler for Men

Short answer

Choose hyaluronic acid filler (JUVÉDERM, VOLUMA) when you want soft, natural volume in the cheeks, mid-face or around the mouth and like knowing it can be dissolved. Choose RADIESSE, a firmer calcium hydroxylapatite filler that also prompts your own collagen, when the goal is a sharper jawline or chin. RADIESSE cannot be dissolved, so placement and dosing need extra care.

The verdict: which filler suits which job?

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as JUVÉDERM and VOLUMA suit men who want to restore lost volume in the cheeks and mid-face or soften folds around the mouth, and who value the safety net of reversibility. RADIESSE suits men who want structure along the jawline or chin, where a firmer product holds a crisp edge and keeps working by stimulating collagen.

Many male faces need both: a little lift in the mid-face and a stronger line along the jaw. The right answer is often a combination placed in the right order.

How does each filler work?

JUVÉDERM and VOLUMA

Hyaluronic acid draws in water and adds volume the moment it is placed. VOLUMA XC is the denser member of the JUVÉDERM family, FDA-approved for cheek augmentation in 2013, with chin and temple approvals added since. Its patient labeling reports that in the clinical study, results lasted up to 2 years in a majority of people treated in the cheeks.

Because it is hyaluronic acid, VOLUMA can be broken down with hyaluronidase if a result is uneven or a complication arises. Our page on whether filler can be dissolved explains how that works.

RADIESSE

RADIESSE is made of tiny calcium hydroxylapatite spheres suspended in a gel. The gel gives immediate lift, then breaks down as the spheres act as a scaffold for your own collagen. Its instructions for use list indications for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds and, for the lidocaine version approved in 2021, for improving loss of jawline contour in adults over 21.

A 2026 systematic review of collagen biostimulators found CaHA results lasting 12 to 18 months in the included studies, with mostly mild side effects. The American Academy of Dermatology gives a more conservative 6 months to 1 year, and actual duration depends on area and how your body responds. For the jaw specifically, see jawline filler for men.

Longevity, reversibility and lump risk

These three trade-offs usually decide it. VOLUMA can last as long as or longer than RADIESSE in the cheeks, and it is reversible. RADIESSE builds collagen and holds a sharper line, but you live with the result until it fades.

Lumps can happen with any filler. With hyaluronic acid, a firm bump can usually be massaged or dissolved. With RADIESSE, the labeling warns against use in the lips because of reported nodules, and the FDA notes that removing fillers not made of hyaluronic acid can be difficult or impossible. That is why RADIESSE belongs in deeper planes along bone, placed by an injector who knows the anatomy.

Side effects and safety

Both commonly cause swelling, tenderness, firmness, redness and bruising at the injection sites, usually settling within one to two weeks per the AAD. The serious risk for any filler is injection into a blood vessel, which the FDA warns can cause skin damage, vision problems including blindness, or stroke. Sudden vision change, severe pain or skin turning white or dusky after filler is an emergency: call 911 or go to an emergency room.

Avoid filler if you have an active skin infection in the area, are allergic to lidocaine or a product component, or, for RADIESSE, have a bleeding disorder, which its labeling lists as a contraindication. Our page on dermal filler risks covers more.

Convenience and cost factors

Both are single-visit treatments with little downtime, though bruising can last several days. Cost depends on the product, the number of syringes and the areas treated; a jawline usually needs more product than a cheek touch-up. Because results last differently, compare cost per year rather than per syringe. Cosmetic filler is generally not FSA or HSA eligible. If you have a wedding, reunion or photo shoot coming up, book well ahead, since swelling and bruising can take several days to fade.

How we choose with you

At Ultimate Male, a filler consultation starts with your face in neutral and in motion, front and profile. One of our aesthetic nurses maps where volume has been lost and where structure would help, then explains which product suits each spot and why. If you are new to filler, starting with reversible hyaluronic acid is often the conservative choice.

Placement for a man looks different from placement for a woman. Cheek filler sits higher and further out to add angle rather than a round apple, and jaw product sharpens the corner below the ear and the line to the chin instead of softening it. Our page on whether filler will look feminine shows the principles. A follow-up once the swelling has settled is when any small adjustments are judged.

You get a plan before anything is injected, with written aftercare. Read more on RADIESSE for men, compare the collagen builders in RADIESSE vs Sculptra, or explore all dermal fillers at our San Gabriel and Downey clinics.

Still unsure? Take the free assessment

Can I have both in the same visit?
Often, yes. A common plan for men pairs VOLUMA in the cheeks with RADIESSE along the jaw, but your injector may stage them to judge the first result before adding more.
Will a CT scan or X-ray show RADIESSE?
It can. The labeling notes its particles are visible on CT and may show on plain X-rays, so tell your radiologist or dentist you have had it.
Which one feels firmer under the skin?
RADIESSE is designed to be firmer and holds a sharper edge, which is why it suits bony landmarks. VOLUMA is a denser hyaluronic acid than lip fillers but still blends softly in the cheek.
