Which approach fits you?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler fits men who want to see the change today, who are trying filler for the first time, or who want the option to reverse it. Sculptra fits men with broader hollowing, often in the temples and cheeks after weight loss, endurance training or simply age, who are willing to wait a few months for a result that looks like their own tissue coming back.
Neither is the better product in general. The choice depends on how much volume is missing, how fast you want results and how you feel about permanence.
Sculptra and HA filler side by side
| HA filler (JUVÉDERM, VOLUMA) | Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it adds volume | Gel fills space immediately | Stimulates your own collagen over months |
| When you see it | Same day, settles over days | Gradually, over several months |
| Sessions | Often one, plus an optional touch-up | One to four, typically three, 3 to 4 weeks apart |
| Duration | About 4 to 12 months for most HA; VOLUMA up to 2 years in cheeks | Up to 25 months for some people in the U.S. study |
| Reversible | Yes, with hyaluronidase | No |
| Aftercare | Light | Massage 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days |
| Temples | VOLUMA XC FDA-approved for temple hollowing (2023) | Used by injectors, outside its labeled indications |
How does each one work?
Hyaluronic acid filler
HA is a gel that binds water and takes up space as soon as it is placed. VOLUMA XC, the denser HA in the JUVÉDERM line, is approved for cheek, chin and temple augmentation; its temple approval in 2023 covers moderate to severe temple hollowing in adults over 21. Its patient labeling reports cheek results lasting up to 2 years in most people in the clinical study, while the American Academy of Dermatology gives 4 to 12 months for HA fillers in general.
Sculptra
Sculptra is poly-L-lactic acid, a material the body slowly breaks down. As it does, it prompts fibroblasts to lay down new collagen, so volume builds over weeks to months rather than appearing on the day. According to its FDA patient labeling, a regimen is up to four sessions scheduled 3 to 4 weeks apart, typically three, and treatment results for some subjects lasted up to 25 months after the last session. Sculptra is approved for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles and, since 2023, for fine lines and wrinkles in the cheek region.
Independent research points the same way. A 2026 systematic review of collagen biostimulators found poly-L-lactic acid improved volume and skin quality with effects lasting up to 25 months, and reported mostly mild side effects such as pain and swelling at the injection site. The trade-off is patience: the first session rarely looks like much, and the change shows up as the series goes on.
Temple and cheek hollowing: what changes the choice
Temples hollow quietly with age, low body fat and weight loss, and a hollow temple can make the whole face look tired or gaunt. In the cheeks, flattening makes folds around the mouth look deeper.
- Small, defined hollow and you want it fixed now: HA, often VOLUMA, placed deep along bone.
- Broad hollowing across temples and cheeks, and you can wait: Sculptra, over a short series.
- First time trying anything: HA, because it can be dissolved.
- Lost volume after rapid weight loss: either, or both; see facial volume loss after GLP-1 weight loss.
Our page on temple filler for men shows how the area is treated.
Side effects and safety
Both commonly cause swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising that fade over days. HA can occasionally leave a lump or visible product, which can usually be dissolved. Sculptra’s labeling describes nodules that mostly appear months after injection, from about 1 to 2 months up to 14 months after the last session; some fade on their own or with treatment, and some have needed surgical removal. Careful dilution, deep placement and the 5-5-5 massage help lower that risk; our Sculptra aftercare guide walks through it.
For any filler, the FDA warns that accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause skin damage, vision problems including blindness, or stroke. Sudden vision change, severe pain or skin turning pale or dusky after treatment needs emergency care: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
Convenience and cost factors
HA is often one visit; Sculptra is a series, so plan for several appointments over a few months. Cost depends on the number of syringes or vials, the number of sessions and the areas treated. Because Sculptra can last longer, comparing cost per year of result is fairer than comparing a single visit. Our Sculptra cost page explains the drivers. Cosmetic filler is generally not FSA or HSA eligible; financing is available through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay.
How we help you choose
Your consultation at Ultimate Male looks at the whole face in good light, including your profile, because temple and cheek hollowing are easy to underrate face-on. One of our aesthetic nurses explains what each product would do for your specific hollows, how many visits it would take and what the first month looks like, and you decide with the trade-offs in plain view.
If you are unsure, starting with HA for an immediate, reversible change and considering Sculptra later is a reasonable path. Read more on Sculptra for men, compare the firmer option in JUVÉDERM vs RADIESSE, or browse all dermal fillers offered in San Gabriel and Downey.
