BOTOX for crow's feet in men

Short answer

BOTOX softens crow's feet by relaxing the outer part of the orbicularis oculi, the muscle that squeezes the eye shut. The label dose is 12 units per side, placed about 1.5 to 2 cm out from the corner of the eye, and injectors adjust for stronger male muscles. Movement lines respond well; crepey, sun-damaged texture at rest often also needs a peel such as the VI Peel.

What crow’s feet are, and what BOTOX changes

Crow’s feet are the fan of lines at the outer corner of each eye. They come from the orbicularis oculi, the ring of muscle that closes the eye, and they deepen every time you squint into the sun or smile. Men who spend years outdoors without sunglasses often have deeper versions earlier.

BOTOX Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is approved for moderate to severe lateral canthal lines, the medical term for crow’s feet. Relaxing the outer edge of the muscle reduces how sharply the skin folds. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that most people see results within 3 to 7 days, lasting about 3 to 4 months.

Keeping a natural squint and smile

A smile that moves only the mouth looks odd, and men tend to notice when their eyes stop crinkling. Good crow’s feet treatment softens the deepest creases while leaving enough muscle to keep a genuine, eye-involving smile.

Placement does most of that work. The BOTOX Cosmetic label places the first injection about 1.5 to 2 cm out from the outer corner of the eye, just outside the bony orbital rim, with two more points above and below it, or angled lower if the lines sit mainly below the corner. Staying outside the rim protects the eyelid. Staying away from the cheek muscles matters too: the XEOMIN label advises avoiding injections too close to the zygomaticus major, the smile muscle, to prevent a drooping upper lip.

Your injector watches you smile and squint before marking points. If you want to keep more movement, say so; the plan can lean lighter on the lowest point, which is closest to the cheek.

Typical units per side for men

The label dose for crow’s feet is 24 units in total: 12 units per side, given as 4 units at each of three points. When crow’s feet are treated at the same visit as frown lines, the label total is 44 units, and with forehead lines as well, 64 units.

Area Label dose Points
Crow’s feet, each side 12 units 3
Crow’s feet, both sides 24 units 6
With frown lines 44 units total 11
With frown and forehead lines 64 units total 16

Those are the starting reference, not a ceiling or a target. Men often have a thicker, stronger orbicularis, and dosing is adjusted to how hard you squint, how far the lines extend and how much crinkle you want to keep. Your injector sets the final number, and it may differ between sides. For a side-by-side look at doses across the upper face, see how many BOTOX units men need.

When sun damage also needs a VI Peel

BOTOX treats lines made by movement. It does little for the crepey texture, fine crosshatching, rough patches and brown spots that years of sun leave around the eyes. If the skin looks lined even when your face is completely still, part of the problem is the skin itself, not just the muscle.

That is where a chemical peel helps. The VI Peel is a medical-grade peel used for tone, texture and sun damage, and the clinic offers it for all skin tones. The AAD’s chemical peel FAQ notes that people with skin of color can safely have peels with an experienced provider, and that daily sunscreen is needed afterward to keep results. Our pages on the VI Peel for men and on sun-damaged skin in men explain who benefits.

What you see Main cause Usual approach
Lines only when smiling or squinting Muscle movement BOTOX
Lines at rest plus crepey texture Movement and sun damage BOTOX, then a peel series
Brown spots, uneven tone Sun damage Peel or laser, plus sunscreen

Who should not have it, the visit, and safety

Skip treatment if you have an infection or inflammation at the site, a botulinum toxin allergy, or a nerve-muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis without specialist advice. Men with very puffy lower lids may need a lighter approach, since eyelid swelling was reported in about 1% of people in the label’s crow’s feet trials.

The visit is quick: an assessment of your smile and squint, cleansing, a few fine injections per side and a cold pack if you bruise easily. Bruising around the eye is the most likely nuisance, because the skin there is thin and the small veins sit close to the surface. Stay upright for a few hours afterward, and skip sunglasses that press hard on the injected area for the rest of the day. Our guide on how to prepare for BOTOX or filler covers what to avoid beforehand.

Any trouble swallowing, speaking, breathing or a sudden change in vision after treatment needs emergency care: call 911 or go to the ER.

Costs and your first visit

Crow’s feet BOTOX is cosmetic, so IRS Publication 502 generally excludes it from medical expenses, and FSA or HSA funds usually cannot be used. The same applies to a VI Peel done for appearance. Ultimate Male does not publish prices; the cost reflects the units used. There is no membership, you pay at each visit, and CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay offer ways to finance.

If your eyes look more tired than you feel, a short consultation can sort out what is movement and what is sun. Call 626-319-5261 or book an aesthetics consultation at San Gabriel or Downey. You will hear whether BOTOX alone will do the job or whether a peel belongs in the plan, and how crow’s feet fit with your other wrinkle relaxer treatments. Many men also pair this with frown line treatment.

Still unsure? Take the free assessment

Can I get BOTOX and a VI Peel at the same visit?
They are usually spaced apart so the skin can recover and the toxin is not disturbed by peel care. Your provider suggests an order and gap.
Will crow's feet treatment affect my vision or eyelids?
Placement outside the bony rim of the eye is designed to protect the eyelid. Eyelid swelling was reported in about 1% of people in the label's trials and is usually temporary.
Do I need to treat crow's feet every time I treat my forehead?
No. Each area is treated on its own merits, though many men choose to treat the upper face together.
