VI Peel for sun damage

Short answer

A VI Peel treats the whole face in one visit, so it suits diffuse sun damage such as blotchy tone, clusters of small freckles and rough, dull texture. Spot-by-spot laser makes more sense for a few distinct brown spots. Rough, scaly patches that persist or keep returning can be actinic keratoses, which are precancerous, so a dermatologist should see them before any cosmetic treatment.

What decades of sun do to a man’s face

Sun damage rarely arrives as one neat spot. After years of job sites, golf courses, fishing trips and commutes with the window down, it shows up as a pattern: mottled tone, clusters of small brown freckles, a dull or sallow cast, rough and slightly leathery texture, and fine lines that look deeper than they should for your age. Our condition page on sun-damaged skin in men covers how that builds up.

That spread-out pattern is why a whole-face treatment can make more sense than chasing individual spots. A VI Peel works across every square inch it touches, removing the outer damaged layers so fresher skin can replace them.

Rough patches that need a dermatologist first

Not every rough spot is cosmetic. The American Academy of Dermatology describes actinic keratoses (AKs) as precancerous skin growths, and they often feel like a patch of sandpaper that never quite goes away. The AAD also warns, on its age spots page, that what looks like an age spot could be skin cancer.

Before any peel, point out:

  • A rough or scaly patch that lingers for weeks or comes back after it flakes off
  • Any spot that bleeds, crusts without healing, itches or grows
  • A mole or brown spot that has changed shape or color

Those go to a dermatologist first. A cosmetic peel is not a treatment for skin cancer or precancer, and it should not delay a proper diagnosis. Our answer on whether sun spots can turn into cancer explains the warning signs.

Peel or laser: when one peel makes more sense

The choice depends on how the damage is spread. One peel handles diffuse problems that a laser would have to treat spot by spot, while a laser is more precise when there are only a few distinct targets.

What you see Usually the better first step Why
Blotchy, uneven tone across the face VI Peel Treats the whole surface evenly
Dozens of small freckles VI Peel Too many to target one at a time
Rough, dull texture VI Peel Laser pigment settings do not resurface
A handful of distinct dark spots PicoSure Pro for sun spots Precise and quick for clear targets
A mix of both Peel first, then laser for leftovers Evens the background, then sharpens detail

How many peels sun damage takes

A single peel usually brightens tone and smooths texture enough to notice. For a specific concern, the manufacturer’s FAQ suggests a series of three to six peels spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance peels up to four times a year. The AAD notes that mild and medium peels can be repeated to keep results.

The AAD is also candid about what a peel cannot do. Men with heavy sun damage or AKs will likely continue to see new spots, so the peel resets the surface while sunscreen protects what you gained.

Your visit and the outdoor week after

  1. Skin review. Your provider separates cosmetic sun damage from anything that needs a dermatologist and photographs your face for comparison.
  2. Application. The peel is layered on during a short visit, and you leave with it on, applying nothing for four hours.
  3. Peeling. VI Derm describes flaking by day two, peeling on days three to five and most people finished by day seven.
  4. Sun week. Avoid direct and intense sun for seven days. Short trips outside are fine if you wear sunscreen and a brimmed hat.

Before the appointment, tell your provider about anything that makes skin more fragile or more sensitive to light. That includes retinoid creams, recent waxing or a recent sunburn, oral isotretinoin in the past six months, and medicines that increase sun sensitivity, such as some antibiotics and water pills. Stop scrubs and retinoids for several days beforehand unless you are told otherwise.

For men who work outside, timing is everything. Cooler months bring less intense sun, which is why our article on fall laser season for sun spots suggests autumn for pigment work. Our page for outdoor and construction workers has practical tips for protecting your skin on the job.

Side effects and keeping your results

Expect redness, tightness and a week of peeling. The main risk is darkening of the treated skin if it meets the sun while healing. A peel can also trigger a cold sore in men who get them, so mention any history before treatment.

Keeping the result is about habits. A broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, a brimmed hat outdoors and a maintenance peel every few months protect what the peel achieved. More on the peel itself is on our VI Peel for men page.

VI Peel for sun damage

Still unsure? Take the free assessment

Will a peel stop new sun spots from forming?
No. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that people with a lot of sun-damaged skin will likely keep seeing new spots. Daily sunscreen after the peel is what slows that down.
Can a VI Peel and PicoSure Pro be combined?
Often, but in sequence rather than on the same day. A peel can even out overall tone first, and once the skin has healed, a laser can target any individual spots that are still visible.
Is it safe to have a peel if I work outdoors?
Yes, with planning. The manufacturer advises avoiding direct and intense sun for the first seven days, so schedule the peel ahead of days off, or plan full shade, a brimmed hat and sunscreen for the whole week.
