How NEO Slim works on the abdomen
NEO Slim combines two energies in one applicator. Radiofrequency (RF) warms the layer of fat that sits under the skin of the belly, and high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) pulses make the abdominal muscles contract hard and repeatedly, far more often than you could manage in a set of crunches. The aim is less fat on top of the muscle and more muscle underneath.
The most-studied device using this RF and HIFEM combination is a brand-name system, and most published results come from it. A 2024 systematic review of 15 studies found that, across the abdominal studies that used imaging, fat thickness fell by a mean of 5.5 mm and muscle thickness rose by 2 mm. The same review noted that two studies reported marginal or no benefit and that study reporting was often incomplete. NEO Slim uses the same type of energy, but results from another manufacturer’s device may not transfer exactly.
Who it suits, and why visceral fat is a different problem
Abdominal NEO Slim tends to suit men who are at or near their goal weight, can pinch a layer of soft fat over the lower belly or flanks, and want sharper definition rather than a smaller waist size. Men who already train and still carry a stubborn lower belly fit this description, and our page on stubborn belly fat in men covers the wider picture.
It is the wrong tool for a large, firm belly that pushes outward. That shape usually comes from visceral fat, which sits deep inside the abdomen around the organs, below the muscle that NEO Slim works on. The NIDDK notes that health risks rise especially when extra fat sits around the waist. Visceral fat responds to weight loss, food, sleep and activity, which is why medical weight loss comes first for those men. Our answer on body sculpting and visceral fat explains the difference.
Some men should not have NEO Slim at all. The upper-arm study of this technology, published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology, excluded people with metal or electronic implants, cardiovascular disease, a malignant tumor or pregnancy. Our answer on who should not get NEO Slim goes through the full list.
Session count and spacing
Ultimate Male’s usual plan is four to six sessions of about 30 minutes, spaced a few days apart, followed by occasional maintenance. Up to two areas can be treated in a visit, depending on your plan.
| Plan element | Ultimate Male’s usual approach | What published studies used |
|---|---|---|
| Number of sessions | Four to six | Typically four, with a range of three to eight |
| Spacing | A few days apart | Four treatments over two to four weeks |
| Session length | About 30 minutes | About 30 minutes |
| Follow-up | Results build over the following weeks | Measured at one to six months |
Your provider adjusts the count to your starting point and goals. Our answer on how many NEO Slim sessions you need explains why some men need the full six.
Your NEO Slim visit, step by step
- Consultation. The provider reviews your health history, implants and goals. Ask for a waist measurement and photos from fixed angles before the first session so progress can be compared, and a body composition analysis can add a baseline for fat and muscle.
- Positioning. You lie back, and the flat applicator is strapped over the abdomen.
- Warm-up. You feel warmth from the RF and the first rhythmic contractions.
- Build. Intensity is raised toward the strongest level you can tolerate, as in the studies.
- Finish. After about 30 minutes, you get up and go back to your day with no downtime.
Expect your abs to feel worked, a little like the day after a hard core session.
What to expect and when
Changes build over the weeks after your last session rather than overnight. In a man near his goal weight, a few millimeters less fat over the muscle and slightly thicker abdominal muscles can make definition easier to see, especially in good light. In a man with more fat to lose, the same change is hard to notice.
Results are not locked in. Gaining weight adds fat back over the muscle, and muscle built by contractions fades without use, which is why the clinic plans occasional maintenance sessions after the first series.
Track it with photos and a tape measure, not the scale. The systematic review found no studies that reported weight change after treatment. Our answers on whether body sculpting gives visible abs and how NEO Slim compares with freezing in NEO Slim vs CoolSculpting help set expectations.
Side effects and safety
The systematic review reported no complications across its studies, and the upper-arm study reported no serious adverse events and a low average pain score. Muscle soreness, warmth and temporary redness are the usual complaints. Tell the team straight away if the heat feels sharp or a contraction is painful, because settings can be lowered mid-session.
Paying for NEO Slim and booking
NEO Slim is a cosmetic body contouring treatment, and under IRS Publication 502 cosmetic procedures generally cannot be paid with FSA or HSA funds. Ultimate Male is direct-pay, you pay per visit with no membership, and longer plans qualify for bundle pricing. CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay can spread the cost, and our NEO Slim cost page explains what affects a quote.
A consultation decides whether your belly is a NEO Slim problem or a weight problem, and you will get a straight answer either way. Call 626-319-5261 for a free 10-minute call or read more about NEO Slim body sculpting.
