JUVÉDERM VOLUMA for men

Short answer

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is a firm hyaluronic acid filler placed deep along the cheekbone to restore mid-face volume lost to age or leanness. In the FDA pivotal study, 67% of treated patients still showed improvement at 24 months. Because it is hyaluronic acid, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can break it down if you dislike the result.

What JUVÉDERM VOLUMA is and where it goes

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is a hyaluronic acid gel built to lift and support the mid-face from deep under the skin, close to the cheekbone. It is one of the firmer gels in the JUVÉDERM family, which is why it holds shape over bone instead of spreading like a softer line filler. The “XC” means it contains lidocaine, a numbing agent, mixed into the gel.

The FDA approved it in October 2013 for cheek augmentation to correct age-related volume loss in the mid-face of adults over 21, based on a pivotal study summarized in the FDA’s Summary of Safety and Effectiveness Data. One in five treated participants in that study was a man. Later approvals added the chin in 2020 and the temples in 2023, the second after a separate trial described in the temple hollowing summary.

For men, VOLUMA is mostly used to rebuild the high, angular cheekbone that flattens with age, weight loss or years of endurance training. When the cheek loses support, the skin below it drops, and the result reads as tired: deeper lines from nose to mouth and a hollow under the cheekbone.

Who VOLUMA suits, and who should skip it

VOLUMA tends to suit men who have:

  • Flattening over the cheekbone that makes the face look drawn or older than it feels
  • Deepening smile lines that are partly caused by the cheek sitting lower than it used to
  • A gaunt look after significant weight loss, including GLP-1 treatment
  • A wish for a change that lasts well over a year but can still be reversed

It is not the right choice for everyone. Men with a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis, allergy to lidocaine, an active skin infection or cold sore in the area, or a bleeding disorder should not be treated until the provider has reviewed the situation. If the main problem is loose, heavy skin rather than lost volume, filler can make the lower face look heavier, and a different plan is more honest. A wider look at that trade-off is on our page about filler after weight loss.

How the clinic decides on VOLUMA for you

The decision starts with your face at rest and in motion, not with a syringe count. Your injector looks at cheekbone projection, the shadow under the cheekbone, the depth of the folds beside the mouth and how your jaw and chin balance the mid-face. Photos are taken from the front and both sides so you can compare later.

If the folds beside your mouth are the complaint, the injector will often treat the cheek first, because lifting the mid-face can soften those lines without filling them directly. Our page on nasolabial fold filler for men explains that order of work. Men who want a fuller structural change across the jaw, chin and temples are better served by a staged plan, covered in masculine facial contouring.

The consultation also covers medicines and supplements that raise bruising risk, any past filler, dental work planned in the next few weeks, and any event on your calendar.

Your VOLUMA appointment, step by step

  1. Review and mapping. You confirm your goals, sign consent and the injector marks the cheekbone points that need support.
  2. Cleansing and numbing. The skin is cleaned thoroughly. A topical numbing cream can be applied, and the lidocaine in the gel adds comfort as the injection goes in.
  3. Placement. The gel is placed deep, often near the bone, with a fine needle or a blunt cannula. The injector works slowly and checks symmetry as they go.
  4. Shaping and review. You sit up, look in the mirror and confirm the result before you leave.
  5. Aftercare. You get written instructions. Plan to skip hard workouts, saunas and alcohol for about 24 hours.

What to expect and when

You see lift right away, though swelling can exaggerate it at first. The study protocol allowed a touch-up roughly one month after the first session, which is a sensible time to fine-tune.

Time after treatment What is typical
Same day Visible lift, tenderness, some swelling
Days 2 to 7 Swelling settles; bruising, if any, fades
About 1 month Final shape is clear; touch-up if needed
12 months In the pivotal study, 85% of patients still met the improvement target
24 months 67% still met it, in patients who received a mean of 6.8 mL

Those durability numbers come from the VOLUMA pivotal study summary. Your own result depends on the amount used, your metabolism and how lean you are.

Side effects, safety and the option to dissolve it

Almost everyone has some reaction in the first days. In the pivotal study, tenderness, swelling, firmness, small lumps and bruising were each reported by most participants, mostly mild or moderate, and the study described them as lasting two to four weeks. Pain and redness were less common.

The serious risk with any filler is gel entering a blood vessel. The FDA warns that this can cause skin damage, vision loss or stroke. Sudden severe pain, skin that turns white or dusky, or any change in vision after treatment needs immediate attention: call 911 or go to an emergency room if vision changes.

VOLUMA’s practical advantage is that it is hyaluronic acid. If the result is lopsided, too full or simply not what you wanted, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can break the gel down, usually within days. Read more on whether dermal filler can be dissolved. That safety net is one reason many men try VOLUMA before a filler that cannot be reversed.

Paying for VOLUMA and booking at Ultimate Male

Ultimate Male is a direct-pay clinic, and your VOLUMA quote depends mainly on how many syringes your cheeks need and whether a touch-up is planned. Cheek filler for appearance is a cosmetic procedure, and under IRS Publication 502 cosmetic procedures generally cannot be paid with FSA or HSA funds. You pay per visit, with no membership, and financing through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending or Afterpay can spread the cost of a VOLUMA plan over time. Our page on dermal filler cost per syringe explains what moves the total.

At our San Gabriel and Downey clinics, cheek filler is placed by our aesthetic nurses after a face-to-face assessment, and the plan is written down before any gel goes in. If VOLUMA is not the right product for your face, you will hear that at the consult, along with what would work better from our dermal filler options. Still unsure? Take the free assessment

Will VOLUMA make my cheeks look round or feminine?
Not when it is placed for structure. For men, the injector usually builds the outer cheekbone and keeps the front of the cheek flat, which sharpens the face rather than softening it.
Can VOLUMA be combined with wrinkle relaxers?
Yes. Many men treat forehead or frown lines with a wrinkle relaxer and mid-face volume with filler. Your injector will tell you whether both can be done the same day.
How many syringes of VOLUMA do men usually need?
It varies with face size and how much volume has been lost. In the FDA pivotal study the median total amount was 6.6 mL across both cheeks, given in up to two sessions, though many men need far less.
