The JUVÉDERM family, and which gels are the soft ones
JUVÉDERM is not one filler but a family of hyaluronic acid gels made by the same company, each with a different firmness and an FDA-labeled use. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your skin already contains. The gels are crosslinked so they last months instead of days, and most versions sold today contain lidocaine, marked “XC,” to numb as they go in.

Why the soft gels do not last as long as VOLUMA
Duration depends on the gel and where it goes. VOLUMA is dense and placed deep against bone in the cheek, an area that moves relatively little. The softer gels are placed in the skin and just beneath it around the mouth, where you talk, chew and smile thousands of times a day. That constant movement, plus the thinner layer of gel, means they are gradually broken down sooner.
So a man who has VOLUMA in his cheeks and JUVÉDERM in his smile lines should expect to top up the lines before the cheeks. That is normal, not a sign the product failed.
Who JUVÉDERM suits, and who should avoid it
Soft JUVÉDERM gels tend to suit men with:
- Lines beside the nose and mouth that are moderate rather than very deep (nasolabial fold filler covers the deeper end)

- Fine vertical lines on the upper lip, common in men who smoked or spent years outdoors
- A first filler experience, where reversibility gives peace of mind
Avoid JUVÉDERM if you have severe allergies or a history of anaphylaxis, allergy to lidocaine or to the gram-positive bacterial proteins used to make the gel, a bleeding disorder, or an active cold sore or infection near the mouth. Men who get cold sores often should mention it, because treatment around the mouth can trigger an outbreak.
How the clinic decides, and what happens at the visit
Your nurse injector watches your mouth at rest, while talking and while smiling, and checks the cheek and jaw above and below the lines. Lines around the mouth often have a support problem behind them, so the answer is sometimes a little VOLUMA in the cheek or jaw plus a softer gel in the creases.
The visit itself runs like this:
- Photos and a short plan of which lines are treated and with which gel.
- Cleansing and topical numbing; the gel’s lidocaine adds comfort.
- Small amounts placed with a fine needle, then gently massaged smooth.
- A mirror check while you talk and smile, so nothing looks stiff.
- Written aftercare and a review offered at about two to four weeks.

What to expect and when
The change is visible immediately. Around the mouth, swelling can make lines look overcorrected for a day or two. By the end of the first week most swelling has gone, and by two weeks you see the settled result. Plan your next review when the lines start to return, often within a year for the softer gels.
Side effects and the dissolvable safety net
Expect redness, swelling, tenderness and possibly bruising, which the AAD says tend to clear within 7 to 14 days. Small lumps can usually be massaged smooth in the first days. Less often there is prolonged swelling, a bluish tint where gel sits too shallow, or infection.
The key safety advantage of JUVÉDERM is that every gel in the family is hyaluronic acid, so an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve it. That covers both cosmetic problems, such as an uneven line, and the rare emergency of gel blocking a blood vessel. Severe pain, skin turning white or mottled, or any vision change after treatment is an emergency: call 911 or go to an emergency room.
