Jawline filler for men

Short answer

Jawline filler for men adds structure at the jaw angle and along the line from chin to ear. RADIESSE (+) is FDA-approved for jawline contour, while VOLUMA is approved for the cheeks and chin, so using it along the jaw itself is off-label. A male jaw usually needs more product than other facial areas, often several syringes, and standardized photos taken before and after show the change.

What jawline filler does for a male face

A strong jaw is one of the clearest masculine features. A 2023 expert guidance paper on jawline filler describes a prominent, broad and straight jawline as a strong indicator of masculinity, and notes that improving the jaw angle is a procedure sought by patients of all genders and ages.

With age, weight loss or simply genetics, the jaw can lose its edge. The angle under the ear softens, the line from chin to ear blurs into the neck, and a small hollow forms in front of the jowl. Filler addresses those specific spots:

  • The jaw angle, the corner below and in front of the ear, which sets how square the lower face looks
  • The jawline, the edge of the lower jaw running from the angle toward the chin
  • The prejowl hollow, the dip in front of the jowl that breaks the line
  • The chin, which anchors the front of the jaw and often needs balancing

Our condition page on loss of jawline definition in men explains why the jaw softens, and our article on masculine jawline proportions shows how the angle, line and chin relate.

RADIESSE or VOLUMA: which product and why

RADIESSE (+) is calcium hydroxylapatite with lidocaine. The FDA approved it on September 1, 2021 for deep injection to improve moderate to severe loss of jawline contour in adults over 21, making it the first filler approved for that use. In the pivotal jawline trial, 75.6% of treated patients improved by at least one grade at 12 weeks, against 8.8% of untreated controls, and 67.3% of those responders still showed improvement at 48 weeks.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is a firm hyaluronic acid gel. It is FDA-approved for cheek augmentation and, since June 2020, for augmentation of the chin. Its use along the jawline itself is off-label, which is legal and common but worth knowing. Its main advantage is that it can be dissolved.

Often chosen for Jaw angle and jawline Chin, or men who want reversibility

A plan can use both: RADIESSE along the angle and line, VOLUMA at the chin. Our comparison of JUVÉDERM and RADIESSE and our page on RADIESSE for men go deeper.

How many syringes a male jaw usually takes

More than most areas. The 2023 guidance states that optimal correction of the jawline can require a greater volume of product than other areas of the face. Its case examples show the range: a 25-year-old man received 7.5 mL of RADIESSE (+), the equivalent of five 1.5 mL syringes, while female examples used about 1.5 to 3 mL per side.

Your count depends on the length and width of your jaw, how much definition you start with, whether the chin needs work too, and how strong a change you want. The result can also be built over two visits a few weeks apart, which lets swelling settle and keeps the change gradual. Our page on jawline filler cost for men explains how syringe count drives the quote.

How results are photographed before and after

Photos are how you judge a jawline result fairly, because you see your own face every day and adapt to change quickly. The 2023 guidance says standardized before and after images should be captured to track treatment changes.

Standardized means the same light, distance, head position and expression every time, usually a front view, both three-quarter views and both profiles, with the jaw relaxed. Swelling from injection takes about three days to fade, according to the guidance, so follow-up photos are taken once the tissue has settled. Ask to see your images side by side at that visit.

Your jawline appointment, step by step

  1. Mapping. Your injector marks the jaw angle, the line toward the chin and the prejowl hollow on your skin.
  2. Numbing and cleansing. The skin is cleaned thoroughly, and both products contain lidocaine.
  3. Placement. Product is placed deep along the bone with a needle or blunt cannula, keeping clear of the facial artery near the jaw.
  4. Shaping. The injector checks symmetry from several angles and molds the product.
  5. Aftercare. Skip hard exercise, heat and alcohol for 24 hours. Our dermal filler aftercare guide covers the rest.

Side effects and safety

Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common. The FDA warns that the most concerning risk with any filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel, which can cause tissue death, vision problems and stroke. The jawline guidance calls vascular compromise uncommon but serious.

Severe pain, skin that turns white or mottled, or any change in vision after treatment is an emergency. Call 911 or go to an emergency department right away.

Paying for jawline filler and booking

Jawline filler is cosmetic, so FSA and HSA funds generally cannot be used, and Ultimate Male does not bill insurance. Your quote depends mostly on product and syringe count, with financing available through CareCredit, Prosper Healthcare Lending and Afterpay. Our answer on how long jawline filler lasts helps you plan maintenance costs.

A stronger jaw sometimes calls for cheek support to keep the face balanced, which is covered on our page about cheek filler for men. For a free 10-minute call, phone 626-319-5261, or read more about our dermal fillers for men.

Still unsure? Take the free assessment

How long does jawline filler last?
In the RADIESSE (+) jawline trial, about two in three men and women who responded at 12 weeks still showed improvement at 48 weeks. Retreatment extends results, and hyaluronic acid products wear off on their own timeline.
Can jawline filler be reversed?
Hyaluronic acid filler such as VOLUMA can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. RADIESSE cannot be dissolved that way, so it is placed in measured amounts and built up over visits if needed.
Will filler make my lower face look wider?
Only if it is overdone or placed in the wrong spot. The goal is a defined angle and a clean line, not bulk, and your injector should show you the plan on your own photos before treating.
